A woman in Southern California lost her Gold’s Gym membership following a viral confrontation with a trans person in the gym’s locker room. The event sparked widespread debate about privacy and inclusivity in shared facilities.
Tish Hyman described being undressed when she turned and saw a naked trans person behind her. Believing she had mistakenly entered the wrong space, she spoke up.
"I was naked, drying off and putting on oil, and when I turned around, there was a man in the locker room. I thought maybe I missed a sign, so I said, 'Sir,' but before I could say more, the person said, 'You can’t tell me nothing, I’m a woman.'"
Hyman clarified that she held no bias toward anyone but felt alarmed by the unexpected situation.
"I don’t have anything against anyone. I’ve just never been faced with this before. I started screaming and asking for help."
Fitness influencer Joey Swoll commented on the situation on June 6, 2025, emphasizing that women should not be labeled transphobic for wanting comfort and safety in locker rooms.
Following the incident and her remarks online, Hyman’s gym membership was revoked. The case continues to generate public conversation about gender identity and privacy in fitness facilities.
