Police in Stockport are investigating an arson incident that occurred just days before Remembrance Sunday, after a fire was set near the war memorial in Marple.
Emergency services were called around 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5, following reports of a group of males near the Cenotaph. A bin and several wooden pallets were set on fire, causing damage to the surrounding area.

“This is an absolutely disgraceful act and will not be tolerated,” said Marple North Councillor Steve Gribbon.
“This was a reckless act that could have resulted in more serious damage or injury. Police units arrived within minutes, and the fire was quickly extinguished by colleagues from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service,” stated Police Sergeant Rachel Walton of the Stockport East Neighbourhood Policing Team.
Authorities are working with Stockport Council and the fire service to help clean and restore the site of the memorial.
