Megyn Kelly Has Too Much to Say About Black Women’s Hair After Michelle Obama’s Book Release - The Root

Megyn Kelly Speaks Out on Michelle Obama’s Comments About Black Women’s Hair

After the release of Michelle Obama’s new picture book The Look, conservative host Megyn Kelly has criticized the former First Lady’s reflections on the pressures she faced as the first Black woman in the White House. Obama’s book explores her fashion and beauty experiences, including how her style drew public scrutiny.

In her interviews, Obama discussed concerns about how her appearance might distract from the policy work of the administration. She acknowledged the scrutiny she received and the broader challenges Black women often face regarding their natural hair, both in public life and professional spaces. These issues have helped inspire legislation such as the 2019 CROWN Act, which combats hair-based discrimination.

Kelly, however, dismissed Obama’s perspective during her podcast appearance, arguing that such experiences are overstated.

“That is bullsh*t,” Kelly said, according to the Daily Mail. “Black women can walk around with whatever hair they want. Only in Michelle Obama’s warped mind do white people not like them, unless their hair looks like white hair.”

Obama never made the claim Kelly described. In an interview with PEOPLE, she clarified that she simply wanted to ensure her hair and style did not overshadow the administration’s political objectives.
