Olivier Rioux, a 19-year-old Canadian, caused excitement as he debuted for the University of Florida, becoming the tallest player ever to compete in US college basketball at 236cm tall. This height surpasses NBA legends Gheorghe Mureșan and Manute Bol by five centimetres.
Rioux received a standing ovation entering with just two minutes left in Florida’s 104-64 win over North Florida. The Florida coach, Todd Golden, was urged by the crowd at halftime to put the 236cm centre into the game. After chants of "We Want Ollie" filled the O'Connell Center, Golden gave in and made history.
Although Rioux did not touch the ball during the game, his presence drew attention from the opposing team. North Florida forward Trey Cady, who was giving up over a foot in height, smiled while measuring himself against Rioux.
