The Houston Rockets confirmed positive contract moves ahead of Friday’s rookie option deadline. Danielle Lerner of The Houston Chronicle reported that the team exercised the options for third-year guard Amen Thompson and second-year guard Reed Sheppard.
Both players are viewed as crucial parts of the Rockets’ rotation. This decision ensures their presence in Houston through the 2026–2027 NBA season, barring any trades or other roster changes.
“Although Houston picked up Thompson’s team option, he will still be looking for a long-term extension in the offseason.”
The move mirrors last October’s situation when the Rockets exercised Jabari Smith Jr.’s option before finalizing his contract extension later that offseason.
With point guard Fred VanVleet sidelined, both Thompson and Sheppard have stepped into larger roles. Thompson has been the starting point guard, averaging 33.5 minutes, 14.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 2.5 turnovers per game. Sheppard contributes 22.5 minutes, 10 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.8 turnovers per game.
Through four games, the Rockets rank 19th in defensive rating (116) but lead the NBA in offensive rating at 125.2, showcasing their strong start to the season.
The Rockets extended team options for Amen Thompson and Reed Sheppard, securing two key young guards and maintaining roster stability through the 2026–2027 season.
