GolfMagic visits Machrihanish, a remote but world-class links course that remains surprisingly affordable. Located about 20 miles from the Mull of Kintyre, famous as the filming spot for Sir Paul McCartney's video on a nearby beach, the journey to Machrihanish is part of its appeal.
Machrihanish began as The Kintyre Golf Club in 1876. Three years later, Old Tom Morris transformed the course from 12 holes to 18 when new land was added. The first hole, often celebrated as one of the best opening holes in golf, was part of this expansion.
The course features natural terrain that feels untouched, a quality that has drawn golf enthusiasts for decades. Old Tom Morris described the land as “specifically designed by the almighty for playing golf.” Tom Doak also praised Machrihanish as “the only course in Scotland that still seems just as raw and natural as the first time I was there 35 years ago.”
In 1914, JH Taylor made some changes, followed by Sir Guy Campbell's final adjustments in the 1940s. Despite these modifications, the course appears effortless and perfectly integrated with the landscape.
Machrihanish ranks within the top 40 courses in Great Britain and Ireland and holds a place in the top 20 in Scotland. While the three-hour drive along the scenic A83 can be challenging, the experience is rewarding.
Visitors can enhance their stay by playing additional rounds at nearby Machrihanish Dunes and Dunaverty courses, extending the enjoyment of this distinctive golfing region.
