Caledon Farmer Among Climate Activists Taking CPP Manager to Court

When Rav Singh chose to begin farming vegetables in Caledon five years ago, it marked a return to her heritage. After years as an environmental educator, cultivating the land became both a tribute to her family’s past and a step toward climate action.

Singh’s parents were farmers in India before emigrating to Canada. Reconnecting with agriculture allowed her to grow traditional foods her family has cherished for generations while also addressing sustainability and food equity.

“I just felt really called to connect with the land on a very deep level and to grow food for people,” Singh told The Pointer. “I wanted to respect and acknowledge my ancestral connection to agriculture in farming because my family, they were farmers back in India… I just really wanted to make sure that folks who were looking for ‘cultural foods’ like okra, bitter melon had the same type of choice that people have when they go to buy something like tomatoes or cucumbers.”

At the age of 27, Singh founded Shade of Miti—the word “miti” means soil in both Hindi and Punjabi. The name honors her roots and reinforces her belief that environmental health starts from the ground beneath us.
