The Orioles are set to add free agent outfielder Leody Taveras, pending a physical, according to Mike Rodriguez. The team has not officially confirmed the signing yet.
Taveras was designated for assignment by the Seattle Mariners in mid-June. After clearing waivers, he was sent outright to Triple-A Tacoma. The Mariners originally claimed him off waivers from the Texas Rangers in early May. A few weeks ago, Taveras elected free agency.
Leody Taveras spent five MLB seasons with the Rangers after debuting in 2020 in a part-time role. Although his early years showed modest hitting output, he was valued for his strong defense in center field and his speed on the bases.
He took on a larger role in 2023, playing 143 games and making 554 plate appearances. That season, he hit 14 home runs and stole 14 bases, with a slash line of .266/.312/.421.
In 2024, Taveras remained a significant presence but struggled offensively, posting an 84 wRC+ over 529 plate appearances and a batting average of .229. However, he stole a career-high 23 bases.
Before the 2024 season, Taveras qualified for arbitration due to his Super Two status. He and the Rangers agreed on a $4.75 million deal for 2025. Despite trade rumors fueled by luxury tax concerns, Texas retained him, though his hitting declined significantly.
"Taveras hit just .241/.259/," reflecting a downturn in offensive production.
Leody Taveras, recognized for his defense and speed, is joining the Orioles after mixed offensive seasons with the Rangers and Mariners, aiming for a fresh start in 2025.
