Outfielder Leody Taveras is set to join the Baltimore Orioles on a one-year, $2 million contract, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, who credited Mike Rodriguez for first reporting the agreement.
The Seattle Mariners designated Taveras for assignment in mid-June. After clearing waivers, he was sent to Triple-A Tacoma. The Mariners initially claimed him off waivers from the Texas Rangers in early May. Taveras later chose free agency.
Taveras spent the previous five major league seasons with the Texas Rangers. He made his MLB debut in 2020 and initially played in a limited role. While his offensive numbers were modest during his first few seasons, Taveras drew praise for his defense in center field and his speed on the bases.
He became a regular starter in 2023, appearing in 143 games. Over that season, he hit 14 home runs, stole 14 bases, and posted a .266/.312/.421 slash line. His performance that year secured him a significant role again in 2024, though his hitting declined.
During the 2024 season, Taveras recorded an 84 wRC+ in 529 plate appearances, hitting .229 but stealing a career-best 23 bases. Due to his Super Two status, he became eligible for arbitration before 2024 and reached a $4.75 million deal with the Rangers for 2025.
However, Texas faced luxury tax pressures, which spurred trade speculation. The team ultimately retained him, but his offensive struggles deepened, as he finished the year hitting .241/.259 before being let go.
“Outfielder Leody Taveras is expected to sign with the Baltimore Orioles,” reported Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Leody Taveras, noted for his defensive talent and speed, signs a one-year deal with the Orioles after a challenging 2024 season and a stint with Seattle’s Triple-A affiliate.
