Shakespeare’s tragedy Othello, directed by Tom Morris, is currently showing at the Theatre Royal Haymarket until 17 January 2026. This West End production offers a fresh take on the classic drama.
Nearly three decades ago, David Harewood was the first Black actor to play Othello at the National Theatre. Now, he revisits the role of the Moorish general whose trust in the deceitful Iago leads to his tragic downfall.
“I played the part ‘balling and screaming’ with rage – responding to claims of Desdemona’s infidelity and his former lieutenant’s treachery as many young men would,” Harewood reflected on his 1997 portrayal.
In this production, Harewood’s Othello initially displays calm authority and wisdom gained over the years. However, as Iago's manipulations deepen, he transforms into a volatile figure, consumed by jealousy and unable to discern the true nature of those around him.
Harewood’s intense performance is matched by Toby Jones' portrayal of Iago, whose cunning and malice drive the play’s tragic events.
“Who could pull off such complex trickery? Harewood has a wonderfully wicked scene partner in Toby Jones.”
This polished production offers a compelling exploration of jealousy, trust, and betrayal, anchored by Harewood’s nuanced transformation and Jones’ menacing duplicity.
Summary: David Harewood’s seasoned and volatile Othello, paired with Toby Jones’ sly Iago, delivers a gripping rendition of Shakespeare’s tragedy filled with tension and dark intrigue.
