Starbucks' latest holiday merchandise, the Bearista Cold Cup, created a significant buzz after its release on November 6. This 20-ounce holiday tumbler, featuring a bear shape, sold out almost immediately across many locations.
The Bearista Cold Cup is a clear container styled as a bear, with a lid and straw. When the straw is placed inside, it resembles a green beanie, a signature color of Starbucks, atop the bear’s head. Starbucks first teased the Bearista on Instagram on November 5, sparking excitement among fans.
Despite the enthusiastic reception, many customers complained online about the limited availability. Some reported that Starbucks stores only received one or two Bearista cups, which sold out too fast.
“Not cool marketing Starbucks to only have 1-2 at each store and allow your baristas to buy them before customers. You should have had additional stock for your baristas and at least 10-20 for each store.”
“Our local store received ONE.”
There were also allegations that some employees bought the cups before customers had a chance to purchase them.
In response to the backlash, Starbucks acknowledged the situation and addressed concerns about the limited stock and distribution of the Bearista Cold Cups.
“We hear your excitement and feedback regarding the Bearista Cold Cups and are working to improve availability for all fans.”
The Bearista Cold Cup generated huge demand upon release, but limited stock and purchase restrictions sparked customer frustration, prompting Starbucks to respond publicly.
