Conservative Alberta MP Matt Jeneroux announced his resignation from the House of Commons following widespread speculation that he might join the governing Liberals. This move comes after a turbulent week for the party.
In a letter obtained by the National Post, Jeneroux, representing Edmonton Riverbend, informed Conservative Party Whip Chris Warkentin on Thursday about his intention to resign, though he did not specify the exact date.
“It was not an easy decision, but it is, I believe, the right one,” Jeneroux wrote.
The letter offers little explanation for his sudden departure, considering he was first elected in 2015.
Jeneroux’s message makes only a brief mention of party leader Pierre Poilievre but expresses respect for “the many remarkable individuals” across both sides of the House of Commons.
This resignation marks the second Conservative MP to leave the caucus dramatically in three days, delivering a significant setback to Poilievre ahead of the leadership review scheduled for January.
MP Matt Jeneroux's resignation amid floor-crossing rumors intensifies Conservative Party challenges just months before a critical leadership review.
