Channel 9’s chief footy reporter Tom Morris has made a surprising move, joining rival network Channel 7. The 34-year-old journalist reportedly informed Channel 9 on Friday morning that he had accepted a lucrative offer from Seven.
According to Code Sports, Seven’s head of sport Chris Jones and SEN boss Craig Hutchison were instrumental in bringing Morris over. The move adds another major name to Seven’s already strong lineup of football commentators.
Although Morris is not expected to take on the main on-air role—Channel 7’s Mitch Cleary will remain lead footy reporter—he will join Cleary and Xander McGuire, who also recently left Nine, forming a strong reporting team.
This recruitment marks another significant win for Channel 7, which also secured Kane Cornes from Nine before the 2024 AFL season. Insiders suggest Morris was persuaded by Seven’s dual broadcast rights for both football and cricket.
Morris had been part of Channel 9 since January 2024, making the transfer a notable shift in the Australian sports media landscape.
“Tom Morris has agreed to a lucrative offer with rival network Channel 7,” reported Code Sports.
Tom Morris’s move from Channel 9 to Channel 7 strengthens Seven’s sports coverage, adding another big name to its expanding football team.
