If the Dodgers force a Game 7 in the World Series, manager Dave Roberts might deploy Shohei Ohtani in unconventional roles. Roberts is open to using Ohtani as an opener or even as an outfielder if needed in the decisive game against Toronto.
After throwing 93 pitches in the Dodgers’ 6-2 loss in Game 4, Ohtani could be available as a reliever this weekend in Toronto. However, using him as a reliever after starting as designated hitter (DH) would cost the Dodgers their DH spot. He can keep the DH role if he starts the game as the pitcher.
“I think we would consider everything. It’s more of just kind of doing whatever we can to get through tomorrow and then pick up the pieces and then see what’s the best way to attack a potential Game 7. So everything should be on the table and will be, for sure.” – Dave Roberts
Roberts planned to discuss the options with Ohtani later Thursday. Notably, Ohtani has never pitched in relief in Major League Baseball. His relief appearances were limited to his rookie season in Japan with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in 2013.
Ohtani famously closed out Japan’s 2023 World Baseball Classic win over the United States by striking out Mike Trout for the final out.
On Thursday, Ohtani took batting practice on the field, a rare sight, hitting balls off a hotel behind center field.
Summary: Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is exploring all options for Shohei Ohtani’s role in a potential Game 7, including relief pitching and outfield, highlighting Ohtani’s unique two-way flexibility.
