Are Movie Theaters Worth It Anymore?

NPR's Bob Mondello and Marc Rivers explore why movie theaters still hold value in the age of streaming and what keeps audiences drawn to the big screen.

A Personal Theater Experience

Last year, I went to see the movie It Ends With Us in a theater.

JUSTIN BALDONI (As Ryle Kincaid): I want to see you again.

BLAKE LIVELY (As Lily Bloom): Now you see me.

BALDONI: You know what I mean.

This film deals with a toxic relationship. While I had mixed feelings about the movie itself, the theater experience was frustrating. A family of five—two adults and three young children—was in the audience. Throughout the screening, they talked, laughed, cried, yelled, played with toys, ate food, left and returned multiple times. The most disruptive moment was when one of the kids shone a flashlight at the screen.

Home Viewing Advantages

This experience made me vow never to watch a movie in a theater again. Watching at home, even on a laptop, feels easier, cheaper, quieter, and more comfortable. Convenience is unbeatable.

The Unique Appeal of Theaters

Still, I recognize that seeing a movie on a large screen among a crowd creates a unique atmosphere that streaming services alone can't replicate. For this week's discussion, I sought opinions on why and when we should choose movie theaters over watching at home.

Авторское резюме: Despite the convenience of home viewing, movie theaters offer a distinct communal experience that streaming cannot fully replace.
