Democrat Mikie Sherrill Elected Governor of New Jersey
Mikie Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot and four-term member of Congress, was elected governor of New Jersey, defeating opponent Jack Ciattarelli, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump.
Sherrill will be New Jersey’s second female governor, securing Democratic control of the state. Her election comes after the state showed signs of shifting rightward in recent years.
Voting on Tuesday was disrupted due to e-mailed bomb threats in seven counties, which were later determined to be unfounded by law enforcement. A judge granted a one-hour extension at some polling places after Democrats requested it for three schools that received the threats.
Sherrill offers some reassurance for moderates within the Democratic Party as they navigate the path forward for next year’s midterms.
