Killing of Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman
An elected chairman of a Pradeshiya Sabha, Lasantha Wickramasekara, was shot dead by a lone gunman while meeting members of the public in his council office.

political assassination. However, the cabinet minister in charge of public security alleged that the victim was a gangster with a criminal past, dismissing it as an
underworld dispute.

On October 22, 2025, two men arrived on a motorcycle at the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha office in the morning. This incident occurred in Weligama, a coastal town in the Matara district of Sri Lanka's southern province, approximately 144 km south of Colombo.
