Former Coal Miner Ventures into Geothermal Drilling
A Colorado entrepreneur, Matt Cooper, is transitioning into the renewable energy sector with a geothermal drilling business.
Cooper's decision came after learning that the northwest Colorado coal mine where he worked would close by the end of the decade. He initially questioned the mine's leadership and the coal industry's decline, wondering
“Is it political?”
However, with the coal industry declining in the U.S. for over 20 years due to competition from cheap fossil gas and renewables, Cooper accepted the situation and planned for his next move.
The coal-fired Craig Station is set to close in 2028, and the Colowyo mine will halt production by the end of the year. Cooper is now focusing on geothermal energy,
the renewable heat beneath our feet.
