Greater Victoria Harbour Authority Cancels Shore Power Plan
The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority (GVHA) has halted a project to install shore power at the Ogden Point cruise ship terminal due to significant cost escalations and increased project complexity.
Despite funding commitments of $31.5 million from Transport Canada and the B.C. Ministry of Transportation, a detailed review showed the project is not financially viable under current conditions.
- A detailed feasibility study explored three scenarios:
- an electrical substation
- a hybrid battery storage network
- floating LNG barges
- Costs for the project ranged from $92.5 million to $159 million.
- The least expensive option would require constructing a large electrical substation and a 7.5km power cable extension from Topaz Park to Ogden Point.
