Albany Catholic Diocese to Pay $8M in Sex Abuse Settlement
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany has agreed to pay $8 million to settle a case of sexual abuse committed by one of its former priests.
A lawsuit was scheduled to go to trial, but the settlement was reached beforehand. The victim, who was 11 years old when the abuse began, claims Father Edward Charles Pratt molested him until he was 16 years old.
The victim filed a lawsuit against the diocese in 2020, after New York State's Child Victims Act went into effect, removing time limitations on old sexual abuse claims.
The law firm representing the victim said this settlement is a sign of how strong the diocese believes the case is against them.
