IEA Chief Calls for Greater Role of Hydropower in Electricity Supply
According to Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), governments and policy makers should focus more on hydropower as a significant source of low-emission flexible power generation amidst rising electricity demand.

Birol emphasized the need for a greater role for hydropower in global electricity systems. Currently, hydropower accounts for approximately 14% of the total global electricity supply.
