Three major labor unions have sued the federal government to stop a social media surveillance program designed to revoke visas and green cards of immigrants with "hostile attitudes" towards the government.
The program has suppressed free speech, including targeting graduate students with pro-Palestine views, according to the lawsuit filed by three civil liberties groups.
The First Amendment applies to everyone who lives in the U.S.
This is the first lawsuit to challenge the surveillance program itself, said Lisa Femia, a lawyer with the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
The lawsuit aims to stop the AI-powered "catch and revoke" program, which has been used to target individuals with views the Trump administration dislikes.
