Olivia Grandy reports for the Saskatoon StarPhoenix that Ruth Bond-Martinson is celebrating her 100th birthday.
At 18, Bond-Martinson joined the navy in 1944 and traveled to Windsor, Ont., for training. She recalled arriving alone at the train station and walking to the base, as
"They forgot I was coming,"and thinking
"Nobody wants me."
Despite the challenging start, Bond-Martinson has spent her life advocating for women and girls in the military. Born in the small town of Belmont, Ont., in a navy-oriented family, she still feels immense pride for her uniform.
Bond-Martinson's 100th birthday party is scheduled for this Friday.
