DW interviewed Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, an exiled Belarusian opposition leader, about the connections between Belarus’s fate and Ukraine's ongoing conflict. Tsikhanouskaya emphasized the importance of democracy and warned European nations that this principle requires constant vigilance and support.
Tsikhanouskaya highlighted how the struggles of Belarus and Ukraine are closely linked. She explained that both countries face threats from authoritarian regimes seeking to suppress democratic freedoms and national sovereignty. The opposition in Belarus draws inspiration from Ukraine's resistance and hopes for a similar successful democratic transformation.
The opposition leader appeals to Europe to remain firm in its backing of democracy in the region. She warns that indifference or appeasement toward authoritarianism would endanger the future of democratic values not just in Belarus and Ukraine, but across the continent.
“Democracy is not a given; it demands defending every day,” Tsikhanouskaya said, underscoring the ongoing battle for human rights and political freedom.
The interview stresses that democracy in Eastern Europe is fragile and requires active defense and solidarity from the international community.
