Strong weather systems are impacting British Columbia’s South Coast and Lower Mainland, prompting multiple overlapping warnings on Thursday morning. The Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) reports that heavy rain and wind are expected throughout the day.
The ECCC has issued a rainfall warning covering several areas including Metro Vancouver, the North Shore, Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, and Howe Sound. Forecasters predict the most intense rainfall during the Thursday afternoon commute.
“An additional 20 to 40 millimetres of rainfall can be expected before the rain eases off later this evening,” said Environment and Climate Change Canada.
The agency also cautioned that water accumulation may occur on roads and in low-lying areas, potentially causing slowdowns during rush hour and increasing the risk of utility interruptions.
In addition to the rain, the ECCC has issued a wind warning for Richmond, Delta, the Sunshine Coast, and much of eastern Vancouver Island. Wind speeds could reach between 70 and 90 kilometres per hour, creating hazardous conditions for residents and travelers.
The ECCC advises residents to “secure loose objects” as gusts are expected to subside by the evening.
