The new Toyota Hilux has been officially unveiled, building on the outgoing platform while introducing fresh styling, an updated interior, and an electric vehicle (EV) option. This 9th-generation bakkie was revealed in Thailand after a series of leaks and a short teaser campaign.
The Hilux holds a special place in South Africa, where it first appeared in 1969 and has remained the best-selling vehicle overall for over 50 years. It is also manufactured locally at Toyota SA Motors’ Prospecton plant in KwaZulu-Natal.
The new Hilux continues to use the outgoing generation's IMV platform, enhanced with new hydraulic engine mounts and shear-type cabin mounts to reduce vibrations and improve ride comfort. Some body panels, including the doors and roof, appear to be carried over, as well as the load bay.
Its dimensions, including the wheelbase, seem largely unchanged from the previous generation.
The most noticeable update is at the front, where most models feature a new honeycomb-style grille inspired by the Corolla Cross, complemented by sharper headlamp designs.
"The latest generation gains new hydraulic engine mounts and shear-type cabin mounts to reduce vibrations and enhance ride comfort."
The new Hilux offers a blend of proven engineering with modern enhancements and styling, keeping its legacy alive while embracing future technologies.
Author's summary: The 9th-generation Toyota Hilux keeps its proven platform but introduces refreshed styling, improved comfort features, and an electric variant, maintaining its legendary status especially in South Africa.
