Toyota Australia acknowledges a shift in consumer preference, stating that the country has passed its “peak ute” phase, with buyers increasingly favoring SUVs over dual-cab utes. As a result, the Toyota HiLux is unlikely to remain Toyota’s top-selling model for much longer.
Market Trends and Sales Insights
Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s sales and marketing head, emphasized the changing market, saying:
“You’ve heard me say it before, and you’ll hear me say it again, but we believe the ute market has reached its peak.”
This statement comes despite the outgoing HiLux leading the sales charts in October 2025, outperforming competitors like the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, and Mitsubishi Triton—four dual-cab utes ranking in the top ten for the month.
