Wedding venue collapse leaves 48 couples scrambling to salvage big day

Wedding Venue Collapse Leaves 48 Couples Scrambling

A popular Tasmanian wedding venue, Hidden Garden Estate at Berriedale, has gone into liquidation, leaving 48 couples rushing to reorganise their weddings.

Council Permit Breach and Restrictions

On Friday, November 7, couples were informed by email that Glenorchy City Council had found the venue in breach of its home business permit the day before. The venue issued a notice titled “Sad,” offering three options:

The new restrictions were harsh: only the owner, Diane Burrows, could conduct ceremonies, guest numbers were limited to 60, and only two vendors were allowed on site.

“DJ, photo booth, live music, wedding planners, event hire suppliers and similar services are all classified as vendors,” the notice stated.

Permanent Closure and Liquidation

Couples had until the close of business on Monday, November 10, to decide. By that afternoon, the venue confirmed it would close permanently and enter liquidation.

“The authority initiating stringent terms that effectively caused couples to vote for refunds, has forced us to close the business,” said owners Shan Strus and Diane Burrows.

They added they had requested a reprieve from the council but it was denied.

Author’s Summary

The liquidation of Hidden Garden Estate forces dozens of couples to cancel or postpone weddings, showing the heavy impact of strict council regulations on small businesses.
