Zelda's journey through Hyrule's ancient past stands out as the finest Hyrule Warriors game to date. Playing Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment naturally brings to mind the story of Tears of the Kingdom and Age of Calamity’s retelling of Breath of the Wild’s origins.
While Zelda titles have not ignored story in previous entries, recent games felt like missed opportunities despite their potential. I appreciated the concept of a narrative unfolding behind Tears of the Kingdom, set after Breath of the Wild, but found gaps in key aspects.
On paper, Age of Imprisonment promised to deliver the story I had hoped for—filling in blanks and connecting pieces toward a more emotionally resonant tale. Yet, like Tears of the Kingdom, its success largely depends on its execution and how well it performs as a Warriors game.
I'm pleased to say it exceeded expectations, becoming a personal sleeper hit of the year.
"Let's take a step back for a moment; I have my doubts you'd be reading this review otherwise, but I assume you have at least a passing knowledge of Dynasty Warriors if you have an interest in Age of Imprisonment."
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment successfully expands the Zelda universe with a compelling story and solid gameplay, achieving what previous entries only hinted at.
