Nearly six in 10 Canadians (59%) worry they will outlive their retirement savings, according to a recent survey by the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.
The survey revealed that over half (52%) of non-retirees who have a financial plan feel confident their money will last through retirement. This highlights that having a plan is the key factor contributing to retirement confidence.
Almost half (48%) of respondents credit someone in their life—a parent, relative, friend, or teacher—with playing an important role in their financial education. These individuals report lower stress levels and higher confidence about retirement.
Anxiety about finances peaks among Canadians aged 55 to 59 and declines once they retire. Despite this, 55% of non-retirees and 44% of retirees stated they do not have a retirement plan, with these figures remaining largely unchanged from the previous year.
“Having a financial plan is the top driver of retirement confidence,” the survey emphasizes.
Author's summary: Most Canadians fear running out of retirement funds, but careful planning and CPP income significantly reduce stress and boost confidence for a secure retirement.
